Young – and I mean young – funders look to give $5,200

Girls Giving Grants - young philanthropy at work!

This is such a fabulous idea that it almost makes me wish I were in 8th grade again.

So you’ve heard of Impact Austin, right? A group of women whose membership requirement is a $1000 donation and a sincere interest in philanthropy. Operating with little-to-no overhead, this group pools each member’s contribution and then, through a grant process, distributes it to local nonprofits. Last year, Impact Austin raised $510,000, divided that into five $102,000 grants, and awarded them to Breakthrough, Ecology Action, Goodwill, SafePlace, and Southwest Key. See more about that story here.

The smart “girls” at Impact Austin have created this spin-off group of real girls called Girls Giving Grants, with girls from 8th -12th grade becoming members by giving $100 and having a similar concern for philanthropy. Last year this group raised and donated $5,700 to LifeWorks. Past recipients have included the Center for Child Protection and the Austin Children’s Shelter.

Well, they’ve got $5,200 to give this year – and they’re looking for grant applications. Grab an application here and get them turned in by October 31.
